Gareth Costello
Tax Director, Bury
I joined in 2017 after various tax roles for firms ranging from the Top 10 to small, specialist firms. I’ve worked in tax teams since my first job after graduating in 1990, picking up my Chartered Tax Adviser qualifications on the way and my present role is providing advice to our owner-manager clients on a range of planning assignments along with providing support to the Bury tax team and colleagues in accounts and audit.

What makes DJH great
It’s the support and teamwork from colleagues in all departments. I said fairly early on after joining DJH that after being made so welcome on joining I genuinely wished I had joined the firm sooner. The good news is I still hold that view to this day, and that speaks volumes for the firm.

My most trusted piece of advice in business is
It is always good to talk – we see far too many situations where a client doesn’t mention something perhaps through thinking that a matter is too unimportant or too trivial to mention to us. The moral is to always make time for such conversations. It is far easier to help a client plan their future acting ahead of taking important decisions compared to having such discussions after the event.

On a Saturday morning you’ll usually find me
With my wife Jayne walking ‘Ted’, our Lakeland Border terrier dog, before coming home and firing up the coffee machine (I’m a bit of a coffee machine nerd by my own admission) – so be warned before raising the subject with me!
